Internal Tooth Whitening
At Brea Endodontics, we aim to provide our patients with the services necessary to achieve and maintain optimal dental health for the brightest smile possible. Traditional tooth whitening may work for many patients with surface staining. Yet others with discolored teeth may require more targeted whitening methods that work in the tooth’s core. Dr. Reid Pullen and Dr. Allen Abrishami can help determine the best option and if you are a good candidate for internal tooth whitening.
What is Internal Tooth Whitening?
Internal tooth whitening, also known as internal tooth bleaching, is a method that brightens teeth that have darkened due to discoloration that starts inside the tooth. The discoloration happens when the internal parts of the tooth, like blood vessels or nerves, get damaged. This method is often suggested for teeth that have had root canal procedures or have been hurt, like from a substantial hit. So, if you are upset about a stained tooth, even after using regular whitening methods focusing on surface stains, ask your Brea Endodontics team about internal tooth whitening, which can help improve your smile and bring back your teeth’s natural luster.
Am I a Good Candidate for Internal Tooth Whitening?
While internal tooth whitening works well for many people with tooth discoloration, it isn’t right for everyone. You might not be a good candidate if you have issues like active tooth decay, gum disease, or tooth restorations like crowns. A consultation with Dr. Pullen or Dr. Abrishami can best determine if you might be suitable for this treatment.
The Internal Tooth Whitening Procedure
Internal tooth whitening is a simple procedure that starts by checking the affected tooth to learn why it is discolored and how bad it is. If Dr. Pullen and Dr. Abrishami determine that internal bleaching is the right choice for you, the process can begin.
First, you will likely receive an anesthetic to prevent discomfort or tenderness. A small hole is made in the back of the discolored tooth to reach the inner chamber. Then, the dentist carefully removes any remaining pulp or debris from the tooth canal. Next, a bleaching agent, usually a peroxide-based solution, is put inside the tooth. The tooth is temporarily sealed, allowing the bleaching agent to work and gradually lighten the color. Once the tooth matches the color of your natural teeth, Dr. Pullen or Dr. Abrishami will remove the whitening agent, clean the tooth well, and seal the opening.
Benefits of Choosing Internal Whitening for a Brighter Smile
Internal tooth whitening is an excellent choice for a brighter smile. One of the main benefits is that it can help with teeth that do not respond well to traditional whitening methods, like external bleaching. Some of the advantages of internal tooth whitening include:
- Long-lasting results: Internal whitening can give results that last for years. This means you won’t need as many touch-ups as with external whitening methods.
- Targeted approach: This method treats only the discolored tooth, keeping the natural color of the other surrounding teeth safe.
- Minimally invasive: Internal tooth whitening is gentle and does not harm much of the natural tooth as other cosmetic dental treatments might.
